Alumina powder, The catalytic transformations of 1, 2-dichlorobenzene, chlorobenzene, 4-chlorobiphenyl, γ-hexachlorocyclohexane (Lindane), naphthalene and phenanthrene were studied over palladium on alumina in hydrogen-saturated water (PdAl2O3H2) at room temperature and ambient pressure. The chlorinated benzenes were rapidly hydrodechlorinated and Lindane was dehydrochlorinated to benzene. Partial or complete hydrogenation was observed for biphenyl and the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The phenanthrene ring was cleaved at the 9, 10-position. In general dechlorination reactions were faster than hydrogenation reactions.
Palladium chloride, Palladium(II) oxide is the inorganic compound of formula PdO. It is the only well characterised oxide of palladium.[1] It is prepared by treating the metal with oxygen. Above about 900 °C, the oxide reverts to palladium metal and oxygen gas. It is not attacked by acids.

Palladium catalyst, Palladium on Activated Charcoal also known as Palladium on Carbon (Pd on C) is a mild hydrogenation catalyst. It is generally a catalyst of choice when the functional group to be hydrogenated is a part of a molecule which has also got some other functional group capable of getting hydrogenated. It is also a catalyst of choice for getting a specific type of isomer. It is therefore a catalyst for selective hydrogenation. Further, it can also be safely used where the reaction conditions are acidic, viz. where acetic acid is a solvent or dilute sulphuric acid is an additive.
