It is an evolved variety of Pusa Basmati Rice developed by Indian Scientists from IARI [Indian Agricultural Research Institute]. Pusa 1121 Basmati Rice is Known for its extra long length. It is released in the year 2003 for commercial cultivation in kharif season. This rice had become widely popular in the year 2007 with the farmers as Pusa 1121 Basmati Rice has yield of 19 to 20 quintals paddy per acre as compared to 9 to 10 quintals for Traditional Basmati Rice. The length of uncooked Pusa 1121 Basmati Rice recorded in the LIMCA BOOK OF WORLD RECORDS [year 2008] is between 8.30 mm to 8.40 mm. Hence this variety becomes the first choice of national & international customers on account of its extra long length, aromatic fragrance and non-sticky texture after cooking. It gives 30 % more volume than the other basmati varieties.
A decade after the release of PUSA 1121 BASMATI RICE, a rice variety PUSA 1509 was developed as a challenger to PUSA 1121. It is a high yielding basmati developed by IARI. It is very similar in its physical characteristics to PUSA 1121. Pusa 1509 is more aromatic with longer grain length than the Pusa 1121. Brand name - VINVELEX
The older varieties are called traditional basmati rice which is technically known as 370 & HBC 19. They are all still in production but in greatly reduced quantities as new hybrid varieties are replacing them as a result of their low yield and certain commercial and culinary benefits. It is a hybrid variety of basmati rice called Pusa Basmati Rice. It is highly demanded across national and international market. At the same time it is in the list of Export Items across the Globe. It has rare flavour and aroma. This rice has been declared as a variety of basmati rice in the Seed Act 1966. Brand name - VINVELEX.
Any Rice other than the Indian Basmati Rice is called Indian Non Basmati Raw Rice. In the world it has been reported that there are 10, 000 varieties of rice, the maximum numbers being in India. Indian Non Basmati Raw Rice comes in all kinds of different shapes & sizes. Some are long, thin and slender, some are short & thick, some are like beads and some may be round. Brand name - VINVELEX.
None have the same characteristics as Indian Basmati Rice i.e. they do not have both the aroma & post cooking elongation. Only some of the long slender rice is shaped like Indian Basmati Rice and may not have either the aroma or the elongation but not both. Some names of Indian Non Basmati Raw Rice are Sharbati, PR- 11/14, PR- 47, PR- 106, IR- 64/36, Sona Masoori Rice and Ponni Rice.
