1) Paper
Talc is used in the pulp and paper industry for coating paper, for pitch control, and as a filler. It helps in controlling pitch and stickies which clog machines and impact runnability. Special properties of talc help in improving quality and productivity of paper.
2) Cosmetics
Fine talc is used as a base for powder and rouge. Talc mattes the skin in cosmetics. It has an antibacterial effect and its pure form does not have any allergenic substance in it.
3) Ceramics
Talc has infinite use in the ceramic industry. It is used in automotive cordierite ceramics, electroceramics, floor tiles, sanitaryware, cordierite - mullite refractories, tableware. It helps in improving the mechanical and optical properties of tiles. In addition, cordierites formed by chlorite-rich talc have high thermal shock resistance.
4) Paints
In this industry, foliated, fibrous or lamellar talc of fine mesh is preferred. It is used as a paint or an extender in paint industry. Colour, particle size and oil absorption are the main criteria for selecting talc for paint manufacture. Talc suitability for paint should have volatile matter below 0.75%, oil absorption within 5 of the approved sample and solubility not more than 0.25% in water. Asbestine is the trade name given to fibrous talc suitable for paint making.
5) Rubber
In rubber industry talc is used for two purposes, one to prevent rubber moulds from sticking and the other as compunding material in the preparation of certain types of hard rubber. The consumption of talc for the latter use is small. Generally grade II to III are used in the rubber industry. Talc should be of fine mesh all passing through 200 mesh.
6) Plastics
Talc is used as a reinforcing filler in polypropylene and engineering thermoplastics for automobile parts, household appliances, electrical & electronics components, and food packaging. It is also used for antiblocking in polyethylene as it restores mechanical properties to recycled plastics. Its other applications areas include biopolymers, semi-crystalline polymers, and wood plastic composites.
7) Pharmaceuticals
