Amoxicillin binds to and inactivates penicillin-binding protein (pbp) 1a located on the inner membrane of the bacterial cell wall. Inactivation of pbps interferes with the cross-linkage of peptidoglycan chains necessary for bacterial cell wall strength and rigidity.
