The Process Description for Edible Oil Refining is stated as under: | ||||||||||
For refining any crude edible / non-edible oils, there are mainly three basic processes which are carried out in the refinery plant. | ||||||||||
Neutralization Process | ||||||||||
First process is neutralization in which the oil is neutralized in order to remove the Free Fatty Acids (FFA) by adding caustic soda. Oil is heated up to about 60C by thermic fluid coils and oil is stirred by the stirrer. Soap stock formed due to chemical reaction is allowed to settle at the bottom of the neutralizer from where it is taken out into respective soap pans. | ||||||||||
Bleaching Process | ||||||||||
The neutralized oil is then transferred for the bleaching process where the color of the oil is removed. The bleaching process is carried out with the help of respective chemicals such as carbon black, bleaching earth etc. Oil is heated up to high temperature of around 100C under vacuum with continuous stirring operation. | ||||||||||
Deodorization Process | ||||||||||
The bleached oil then goes to the filter press where the spent chemicals are separated and clean bleached oil is obtained. This oil goes to deodorizer where the oil is to be heated above 110C and under vacuum by providing live steam from the bottom. The temperature of the oil is raised up to certain limits. The entire process of deodorization is very crucial for the quality of the oil. Finally, the smell and unpleasant odor from the oil is removed. | ||||||||||
Cooling Process | ||||||||||
The high temperature oil is to be cooled in the cooler where the water circulating coils take away the heat. The cooled oil is again allowed to pass through the filter press for the final filtration process. Finally, totally clean, filtered, refined transparent oil is obtained at the output. | ||||||||||
Dewaxing Process | ||||||||||
Some oils such as corn oil / maize germ oil and sunflower oil contain considerable amounts of waxes in them. Sometimes these waxes give very hazy appearance to the oil and it is advisable to remove these waxes. In such cases separate dewaxing process is carried out. Our Tinytech refinery plants are equipped with dewaxing units in order to remove the waxes from the oil and making it more stable and palatable. | ||||||||||
Fractionation Process | ||||||||||
For refining the palm oil, the above method is carried out with slight process modifications. There is addition of few extra equipments in the refinery such as chilling plant, crystallizer etc and the fractionation method is performed. Vegetable oil and fat resources are essential to mankind as a source of nutrient and industrial raw materials. Crude vegetable oil obtained from various oil milling units is further refined before use for edible purposes. Refined vegetable oil is a process where free fatty acids are volatized, condensed and recovered simultaneously with vacuum de-colouring operation.

The Crude Vegetable Oil contains small amounts of naturally occurring materials such as proteinaceous material, free fatty acids and phosphatides. The most common method of refining oil is by reacting it with an alkali solution which neutralizes the free fatty acids and reacts with the phosphatides. These reacted products and the proteinaceous materials are then removed by centrifuge. Following alkali refining, the oil is washed with water to remove residual soap, caused by saponification of small amounts of oil. Color-producing substances within oil such as carotenoids and chlorophyll are removed by bleaching process, which employs the use of adsorbents like acid activated clays. Volatile components are removed by deodorization which is performed under high temperature and vacuum. Finally, the refined vegetable oil is filtered and is used for the further respective purposes. |
There are 2 refining methods in the vegetable oil refinery plant:

1) Chemical Refining |
The chemical method of refining removes the Free Fatty Acids and other impurities in a chemical way by Acid-Base neutralization process. Caustic soda is used as a base for this method. The addition of Caustic Soda to the acid completes the neutralization. This results in the formation of sodium soaps and gums which are then separated by Separators & Centrifuges. The neutralized oil is subsequently bleached and deodorized. |
2) Physical Refining |
The physical method of refining removes the Free Fatty Acids in single stage of deodorization process while the gum content from the crude oil is removed in the degumming process. Some crude oils contain non-hydratable phospholipids which are not removed by chemical refining. For that, physical refining is to be done. In physical refining, comparatively more FFA is distilled out giving a high oil refining rate with minimum oil loss. |

Cold Press Expeller is used for the expelling of oil at a lower temperature of below 20 degree Celsius. It is also referred to as the cold oil press method in which no heat is involved. The entire operation of cold oil pressing is carried out at the normal room temperature. For crude palm oil refinery plant, fractionation process is required in which palm olein and palm stearin are separated by scientifically cooling the refined palm oil by chilling plant and then filtering the oil. For this purpose crystallizing vessel is used in which chilling pipe coils cool the oil for fractionation. Palm stearin crystals are formed due to chilling which are separated in the filter press and pure liquid of palm olein is obtained and palm stearin cake is retained in the filter press. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

This process is used to separate the palm olein and palm stearin from the RBDPO (Refined, Bleached, Deodorized Palm oil) produced by physical /chemical treatment. The BDPO is further passed through the fractionation process to get various grade of palm olein and palm stearin.
