Ceramic Cones

Pyrometric cones are used to determine the combined effect of temperature and time, usually called Heat work in the firing of ceramic wares. The physical and chemical changes in the cones resulting in deformation are similar to those taking place in the ware being fired. This phenomenon is an important factor contributing to the usefulness of pyrometric cones for the following purposes :To indicate the progress of firing, as the products approach maturity through the use of series of cones mounted to a suitable plaque and observed during firing, To determine by observation of the cones, the end point of firing i.e. when full maturity of the product is reached, To determine by observation of the cones, the end point of firing i.e. when full maturity of the product is reached, To provide evidence of adverse atmospheric conditions during firing, as indicated by the color and or temperature of the cone surfaces after firing

Prior to the indigenous manufacture of Pyrometric Cones in India, the ceramic Industry used Cones from U.K. and America. To meet and to suit the requirements of ceramic industry in the Country, in 1968 STANDARD VISHNU PYROMETRIC CONES have been introduced by M/s Vishnu Pyrocermics, conforming to imported Cones. Our sincere efforts to produce thoroughly reliable Pyrometric Cones have been highly successful and the demand has been so great that special arrangements for quality and quantity Production have been established.

General Description :

Pyrometric cones are used to determine the combined effect of temperature and time, usually called Heat work in the firing of ceramic wares. The physical and chemical changes in the cones resulting in deformation are similar to those taking place in the ware being fired. This phenomenon is an important factor contributing to the usefulness of pyrometric cones for the following purposes :

  • To indicate the progress of firing, as the products approach maturity through the use of series of cones mounted to a suitable plaque and observed during firing
  • To determine by observation of the cones, the end point of firing i.e. when full maturity of the product is reached
  • To determine the degree of uniformity or firing treatment in various parts of the ware setting through the use of a number of suitably located plaques of cones
  • To provide evidence of adverse atmospheric conditions during firing, as indicated by the color and /or temperature of the cone surfaces after firing
  • In addition, small specially processed cones are used to classify the refractoriness i.e. Pyrometric cones Equivalent (P.C.E.) value of ceramic materials or products.

The usefulness of pyrometers is limited, in that they do not provide adequate information or evidence of the combined effect of time and temperature such as is obtained from cone readings. The temperature data obtained from pyrometers is used either to note advances in kiln temperatures at the thermocouple location or to note whether a definite temperature is being maintained at a given point.

Preparation :

  • Standard Vishnu Pyrometric Cones are machine made, and are dimensionally accurate and free from warping. These cones are made from carefully standardized mixtures of purest raw materials
  • The standard uniform rate of rise of 150° C per hour (especially in the last one to two hours) is maintained to standardize and check all new batches of cone powder mixtures and finished products. The cones of new batches of cone powder must match the standard test cone perfectly before the powder is released for cone production.

The use of Cones :

  • Cones should be carefully mounted in a suitable plaque. The following points should be kept in view :
  • The material of the plaque should be more refractory than the cones for which it is to be used
  • The total shrinkage of the plaque should not be excessive; otherwise, the plaque may crack around the cones or even cause the cones to break off at the base. If the plaque shrinks much less than the cones, the latter may become loose and tilt over, giving false indication of bending
  • For mounting the cones in the plaque, the use of template or jig is recommended to facilitate setting the cones at the correct height and angle of 82° with the horizontal plane of the plaque and to a depth of 3 to 4 mm
  • Cone plaque setting should be standardized so that results as shown in various plaques may be comparable. These may be mounted so that they will

1). Deform at right angles to the axis of the plaque2). Deform along the axis of the plaque3). Deform at an angle (viz. 45°) to the axis of the plaque. If the cones are so set that one may face an another, the higher cone number should fall on the lower number cone.

  • The end point of the cone is indicated when the tip of the cone bends and touches the plaque
  • For those who are already using cones other than Vishnu Cones the changeover to Vishnu cones is quite a simple matter, All that is necessary is to fire beside a set of the cones at present in use a set of Vishnu cones made up of such numbers as the manufacturers will be pleased to advise
  • A careful observation of the cones during their squatting period (noting the satisfactory sequence of the Vishnu series cones together with an examination of the two sets of cones after they are drawn will indicate at once which cones of Vishnu series should be used in substitution that particular position in the oven or Klin
