In a bandsaw, workpieces are fed into the cutting edge of the machine. The bandsaw machine cuts by drawing a continuous metal band across the workpiece. The bandsaw blade is supported and driven by a drive wheel and an idler wheel. Because each tooth is a precision cutting tool, accuracy can be held to close tolerances. This eliminates or minimizes many secondary machining operations. In addition, chip removal is very fast. When the bandsaw is turned on, the operator raises the saw and makes the blade descend on the clamped material, cutting it as the band blade moves. After the cutting is completed, the bandsaw switches off automatically.

Horizontal bandsaw machines typically are floor-mounted machines that are used for simple cutting of solid steel, tubing and odd shaped material. The bandsaw blades are driven by an electric motor. There is a belt and pulley arrangement to drive the motor. This mechanism allows the speed of the blades to be adjusted in discrete stages.

In vertical bandsaw machines, the cutting position of the blade is vertical. A typical vertical bandsaw machine is driven by an electric motor through a belt transmission. The belt allows adjustment of the blade speed. The blade rotates on a fixed track between the idler wheel mounted above the worktable and the drive wheel mounted beneath the work table and cuts into the side of the stock. The stock is moved against the blade to make the cut. To allow mitered cuts, the table can be tilted front-to-back or sideways. Since the machine can weld its own blades, internal cutting is possible.
