In most of our microcontroller based products we need 5v regulated power supply. Voltage fluctuations may result in undesirable effect on an electronic system, so to maintaining a steady constant voltage is necessary according to the voltage requirement of a system. Here we provide simple voltage regulator circuit using 7805 IC.

7805 is a voltage regulator integrated circuit. It is a member of 78xx series of fixed linear voltage regulator ICs. Which restricts the voltage output to 5V. It comes with provision to add heatsink.The maximum value for input to the voltage regulator is 35V. It can provide a constant steady voltage flow of 5V for higher voltage input till the threshold limit of 35V. If the voltage is near to 7.5V then it does not produce any heat and hence no need for heatsink. If the voltage input is more, then excess electricity is liberated as heat from 7805. Pin 1 is input voltage that has to be applied, pin 2 is ground and pin 3 is output regulated voltage. Diode 1N4007 prevents negative voltages to the 7805 IC. C1& C2 provides filtered output. When regulated voltage coming to the output terminal LED will glow. This circuit can connect any of power supply sections if regulated 5v is needed.

Water Level Indicator DIY Assembled Tested Kits

A water level indicator is used to indicate the level of water in an over head tank. This keeps the user informed about the water level at all times and avoids the situation of water running overflow. Four LEDs to indicate the 4 different water level positions through BC547.

S1, S2, S3 and S4 are the four probes for different positions of water tank. When any of the probes touches the water circuit will be closed and voltage coming to the base of the transistor(the base current Ib get increased by current passing through the water), LED goes ON. So easily we can understand water in the tank is in corresponding water position. 100k Resistor is used to pull-down the base of the transistor(Not to produce false result). If direct Vcc voltage coming into the base of the transistor, It may affect the transistor(So 1k is provided series to the base to limit the base current to micro amperes ).

Dancing LED Using 555 DIY Assembled and Tested Kits

Astable Multivibrator circuit is a simple multivibrator which has no stable state. It has two LED, which will flashing with a time period. NE555 oscillator is used for generating the free running waveforms whose output will be adjustable by varying the external RC network.

NE555 is a Timer IC, which is connected in an astable multivibrator mode. In NE555, 8thpin & 1stpin is connected to Vcc & Ground. The 4thpin is Reset pin which is active low and is connected to Vcc to avoid accidental resets. 5th pin is the Control Voltage pin which is not used, so to avoid high frequency noises it is connected to a capacitor C2 whose other end is connected to ground. Usually C2 = 0.01F. The Trigger (pin 2) and Threshold (pin 6) inputs are connected to the capacitor C1 which determines the output of the timer. 2nd& 6thPin are connected together allowing the circuit to re-trigger itself. During each cycle, capacitor C1 charges up through both timing resistors, R1 and R2 but discharges itself only through resistor, R2 as the other side of R2 is connected to thedischargeterminal, pin 7. Finally circuit works as a free running multivibrator. It has astable outputs (Pin 3). Diode 1N4007 is used for preventing the negative voltages while discharging the Capacitor C1. In Output, If LED1 is ON then LED2 is OFF and vice versa.

5V Power Supply for Transformer DIY Assembled and Tested Kits

A good regulated AC to DC power supply circuit is essential for any electronic products. Microcontrollers require a 5V DC supply, so the AC 230V needs to be converted into 5V DC using the step-down converter in their power supply circuit.

Circuit consists of 4 parts: Step down transformer, bridge rectifier, capacitor filter and voltage regulator IC. The transformer step downs the high voltage AC to a low voltage AC. W10 (Bridge rectifier) internally consists of four diodes which are connected in the form a bridge. We know that the diode is an uncontrolled rectifier which will conduct only forward bias and will not conduct during the reverse bias. Output of the W10 will get 15v DC. 15V DC can be regulated into 5V DC using 7805 IC, but before this, it is required to obtain pure DC power. The output of the W10 bridge rectifier is a DC consisting of ripples also called as pulsating DC. This pulsating DC can be filtered using a capacitor filter for removing the ripples. The Capacitor input increases from zero to a peak value and, while the supply voltage decreases from peak value to zero, capacitor starts discharging. This charging and discharging of the capacitor will make the pulsating DC into pure DC.

A Light Dependent Resistor (LDR) or a photoresistor is a device whose resistivity is a function of the incident electromagnetic radiation. Hence, they are light sensitive devices. An Dancing LED using Astable Multivibrator is a simple hobby circuit which has no stable states. Its output oscillates continuously between its two unstable states without the aid of external triggering. The time period of each states are determined by Resistor Capacitor ( RC ) time constant.

When the circuit is switched on one transistor will driven to saturation (ON) and other will driven to cutoff (OFF). When a transistor is ON, its collector and emitter act as a short circuit. But when it is OFF they acts as open circuit. So in the above circuit when a transistor is in OFF state its collector will have the voltage Vcc and when it is ON its collector will be grounded.Consider Q1 is ON and Q2 is OFF. During this time Capacitor C2 is charging to Vcc through resistor R2. Transistor Q2 is OFF due to the negative voltage from the discharging capacitor C1 which is charged during the previous cycle. After a time period the capacitor C1 discharges completely and starts charging in reverse direction through R1.When the Capacitor C1 charges to a voltage sufficient provide base emitter voltage of 0.7V to the transistor Q2, it turns ON and capacitor C2 starts discharging. The negative voltage from the capacitor C2 turns off the transistor Q1 and the capacitor C1 starts charging from Vcc through resistor R and base emitter of transistor Q2. Thus the transistor Q2 remains in ON state. As in the previous state, when the capacitor C2 discharges completely it starts charging towards opposite direction through R2. When the voltage across the capacitor C2 is sufficient to turn ON transistor Q1, Q1 will turn ON and capacitor C1 starts discharging.This process continuous and produces rectangular waves at the collector of each transistors.

As a result Output LEDs flashing with charging & discharging time period.

A good regulated AC to DC power supply circuit is essential for any electronic products. Microcontrollers require a 5V DC supply, so the AC 230V needs to be converted into 5V DC using the step-down converter in their power supply circuit.

Circuit consists of 4 parts: Step down transformer, bridge rectifier, capacitor filter and voltage regulator IC. The transformer step downs the high voltage AC to a low voltage AC. W10 (Bridge rectifier) internally consists of four diodes which are connected in the form a bridge. We know that the diode is an uncontrolled rectifier which will conduct only forward bias and will not conduct during the reverse bias. Output of the W10 will get 15v DC. 15V DC can be regulated into 5V DC using 7805 IC, but before this, it is required to obtain pure DC power. The output of the W10 bridge rectifier is a DC consisting of ripples also called as pulsating DC. This pulsating DC can be filtered using a capacitor filter for removing the ripples. The Capacitor input increases from zero to a peak value and, while the supply voltage decreases from peak value to zero, capacitor starts discharging. This charging and discharging of the capacitor will make the pulsating DC into pure DC.

7805 is a voltage regulator integrated circuit. It is a member of 78xx series of fixed linear voltage regulator ICs. Which restricts the voltage output to 5V. It comes with provision to add heatsink.The maximum value for input to the voltage regulator is 35V. It can provide a constant steady voltage flow of 5V for higher voltage input till the threshold limit of 35V. Again Filter circuit is added to eliminate remaining ripples. Astable Multivibrator circuit is a simple multivibrator which has no stable state. It has two LED, which will flashing with a time period. NE555 oscillator is used for generating the free running waveforms whose output will be adjustable by varying the external RC network.

NE555 is a Timer IC, which is connected in an astable multivibrator mode. In NE555, 8thpin & 1stpin is connected to Vcc & Ground. The 4thpin is Reset pin which is active low and is connected to Vcc to avoid accidental resets. 5th pin is the Control Voltage pin which is not used, so to avoid high frequency noises it is connected to a capacitor C2 whose other end is connected to ground. Usually C2 = 0.01F. The Trigger (pin 2) and Threshold (pin 6) inputs are connected to the capacitor C1 which determines the output of the timer. 2nd& 6thPin are connected together allowing the circuit to re-trigger itself. During each cycle, capacitor C1 charges up through both timing resistors, R1 and R2 but discharges itself only through resistor, R2 as the other side of R2 is connected to thedischargeterminal, pin 7. Finally circuit works as a free running multivibrator. It has astable outputs (Pin 3). Diode 1N4007 is used for preventing the negative voltages while discharging the Capacitor C1. An Dancing LED using Astable Multivibrator is a simple hobby circuit which has no stable states. Its output oscillates continuously between its two unstable states without the aid of external triggering. The time period of each states are determined by Resistor Capacitor ( RC ) time constant.

When the circuit is switched on one transistor will driven to saturation (ON) and other will driven to cutoff (OFF). When a transistor is ON, its collector and emitter act as a short circuit. But when it is OFF they acts as open circuit. So in the above circuit when a transistor is in OFF state its collector will have the voltage Vcc and when it is ON its collector will be grounded.Consider Q1 is ON and Q2 is OFF. During this time Capacitor C2 is charging to Vcc through resistor R2. Transistor Q2 is OFF due to the negative voltage from the discharging capacitor C1 which is charged during the previous cycle. After a time period the capacitor C1 discharges completely and starts charging in reverse direction through R1.When the Capacitor C1 charges to a voltage sufficient provide base emitter voltage of 0.7V to the transistor Q2, it turns ON and capacitor C2 starts discharging. The negative voltage from the capacitor C2 turns off the transistor Q1 and the capacitor C1 starts charging from Vcc through resistor R and base emitter of transistor Q2. Thus the transistor Q2 remains in ON state. As in the previous state, when the capacitor C2 discharges completely it starts charging towards opposite direction through R2. When the voltage across the capacitor C2 is sufficient to turn ON transistor Q1, Q1 will turn ON and capacitor C1 starts discharging.This process continuous and produces rectangular waves at the collector of each transistors.

As a result Output LEDs flashing with charging & discharging time period.
