Polyvinyl Butyral Resin is the most widely used type of Polyvinyl Acetal Resins. It is a reaction product of polyvinyl alcohol with butyraldehyde. The final properties and solubility of Polyvinyl Butyral Resin largely depends on molecular weight and ratio of vinyl acetal, vinyl acetate groupings present in the molecule. The molecular weight and amount of functional groups are judiciously selected for each grade of polyvinyl butyral resins so that it conforms product having predetermined specifications and its performance in its end applications.

These resins are an extension of Styrenated alkyds. They allow for greater formulation because of wide range of acrylic monomers available. These resins have very fast drying rate which helps them to be used in roller coating enamels, metal decoration, industrial fast drying finishes, giving excellent resistance to water, petrol and oil.

These resins can be classified in two groups according to their cross linking mechanism: Hydroxyl functional & Carboxyl functional. Hydroxyl functional acrylics are normally cross linked with amino resins, whereas the carboxyl functional acrylic resins are cross linked with epoxy resins. These resins combine the same wide range of properties of the thermoplastic resin with excellent solvent resistance, flexibility, impact resistance and high hardness of cross linked system.
