Details :

• With the energy demand from the system being reduced by use of high efficiency motors, the utility companies need to generate lesser energy and therefore burn lesser fossil fuels.
• During continuous operation, the self-ventilated motors cannot generate their full rated torque over the whole speed range. The continuously permissible torque is also lowered when the speed is reduced due to the reduced cooling effect. This is illustrated in the figure. Depending on the speed range, a corresponding torque reduction and therefore power-output reduction has to be carried out in the case of self-ventilated motors.

• The new IS:12615 covers single speed, three-phase, 50Hz, cage induction motors that:
• Have rated voltage ≤1000V;
• Have a rated output 0.37kW ≤ PN ≤ 375kW;
• Have either 2, 4 or 6 poles;
• Meet frame size to output relation as stipulated in IS:1231 (for outputs covered by IS:1231);
• Are rated on the basis of either duty type S1 (continuous duty) or S3 (intermittent periodic duty) with rated
• Cyclic duration factor of 80% or higher;
• Are capable of operating direct on-line;
• Are designed for operation on virtually sinusoidal and balanced voltage conditions as defined in 7.2.1 of
• IS/IEC 60034-1

This series are used for Crane Duty applications / Lift duty applications where movement of inertia of the load is maximum equal to movement of inertia of motor. For S3 series the duty cycle is designated as S3-40%, S3-60%. The no. of starts is also less, either 45 or 60 starts per hour. For S4 Series the duty designation is mentioned as S4 – 60% CDF, 150 starts per hour Extra.

S3 Series of motors can be used in :
