With so many of the fabrications produced from HIC steel being used in such critical applications it is essential to be certain that the steel used is fit for purpose. CarElso HIC Premium+ has been produced with the sole intention of being HIC resistant: a plate with the same properties throughout every millimetre of thickness and every square metre of area.
It is possible to take test pieces from an "ordinary" plate and subject them to rigorous and exhaustive HIC testing. If the right pieces are selected it is more than likely that they will pass the tests and can be described as HIC resistant. But just because the test pieces have passed does this mean the plate they came from is HIC resistant? It might but can anyone be entirely certain that the whole of the rest of the plate is completely the same as the test piece particularly when the plate has not been made with the intention of it being HIC resistant?

Weoffers one of the largest ranges of high strength quenched and tempered structural steel plate in Europe. A variety of steel specifications is available including those with a minimum yield strength of 690 MPa and with a minimum yield strength of 890 MPa. The stock encompasses a range of sophisticated high strength low alloy steel plates from leading Western European producers and is supplied in plate thicknesses from 3 mm up to 300 mm.

Roller quenched steels are used in situations where a combination of high strength and toughness coupled with good weldabilty is required. The main feature of the roller quench process is the use of rotating rolls to hold the plate during quenching, coupled with an extremely efficient quench. Depending on plate thickness and composition, the required rate of cooling is achieved by passing the plate directly through the quench unit or by reciprocating the plate within the unit. The effects of quenching are applied uniformly over the entire plate surface. It is the water curtain, unique to the roller quench unit, which generates the very intense initial cooling rates that achieve the desired properties with very low levels of micro -alloying. The result is a product with improved flatness, greater uniformity of properties, low residual stresses and better weldabilityChemical Composition ABRAZO400Content % (ladle analysis), maximum - plates from 8 mm to 80 mm thick*
High yield cold forming steel plate offers both strength and formability, with excellent surface quality, dimensional and geometrical accuracy and uniformity of properties.
Steel structures can be made lighter which means that the payload of machines and equipment can be increased and fuel consumption reduced.

Despite its high strength, this steel is easier to weld than conventional lower yield grades. Good weldability means that preheating is not necessary under normal conditions. Surfaces must be both dry and clean before welding and welding materials must be of sufficiently low hydrogen content.
The weld material properties, including strength, can be of a lower strength than the steel being used provided that the weld is situated in a less stressed part of the structure.
