Mechanical CAD is best explained by the latest designs we see in practical world or many versions of one product displayed in very less time, one of the best example of this is many versions of Bajaj Pulsar, which comes in many variants, like 150, 180, 220, 280, 350 etc. Mechanical Cad comes into existence when Mechnanical engineers, industrial engineers, product designers etc. started to move to Computers for creating the drawings or designs. Mechanical CAD broadly includes a part of CAD (which consists of AutoCAD, Microstation, Soildworks, Creo, Catia, Inventor, NX, etc. ) which is used for making 2D or 3D models or drawings. A part of CAE (which includes Ansys, Hypermesh, Nastran etc.) which is used for the analysis of 3D models and thus after this analysis only the product is sent for Prototyping. A part of CAM (which is used for machining and generating the machine codes to manufacture or machine a product) which is finally used in production of components or product. Mechanical CAD today is used by every company in each and every industrial setup and big manufacturing units for Designing and developing their products. Without Mechanical CAD, we would have not thought of major developments in very less time.
