Authentic copy of a Roman shield in original size. This style of shield with its handmade painted design was copied from grave steles for legionairies and trajan's column(see below) in Rome. It is made from plywood with a linen surface and a rim of brass. It weighs abt. 6 kgs. (13 lbs). Overall height : 100 cms. (40 inch) Overall width : 73 cms. (29 inch) measured along the surface. Its brass buckle can be easily mounted and de-mounted by 8 screws with brass knobs on top as shown on my bottom photo. Now, see the image of a Roman warfare "testudo", the protective screen of overlapping shields held overhead and on the sides.

When William the Conqueror sailed across the Channel in 1066 he took 3000 horses on 700 small sailing boats with him and headed from the Normandy across the channel to England.in the following battle William's army was victorious due largely to his cavalry assisted by archers. They charged into the wall of shields put up by the Saxon infantry and were victorious.On the wellknown Bayeux tapestry one can see how the Norman cavalry (shields on the left side) clash with the English infantry in bitter conflict.the cavalry shields were held with 2 strong leather straps (one hung over the shoulder and the other over the left arm).The cavalry kite shield replica is made from wood and weighs 3 kgs.(6 1/2 lbs.):It is 133 cms. Our round Viking shield replica is made from 1/2" plywood and weighs 4.8 kgs.(10.5 lbs.):Its total diameter is 90 cms. (36"), its steel buckle has a diameter of 13 cms (5"), including riveting rim it is 20 cms.(8"). The shield is held with one hand under the buckle and 2 dragons (a subject popular amongst the vikings) are shown on its front painted in oil on canvas .
