Quartz Wool & Ground Joints

Fused quartz wool has the same properties as pure quartz glass. The fibres are non-flammable and incombustible. The fibres maintain their usable mechanical properties up to 1050C.

High purity quartz wool is used for filtration and insulation in environments where the properties of high purity quartz are needed.

These fibres, wools, and fillers have a high temperature resistance, are immune to corrosion and have high electrical resistivity, making them ideal for fillers and insulators in electronics, insulators in space craft and high tech airplanes, high temperature filtration, insulators for very hot or very corrosive environments and as an asbestos replacement.

It is available in 10gm and 100gm packing.

The quartz ground joints are manufactured from quartz tubing and careful attention is paid to the accuracy of form, uniformity of surface finish, profile and taper to reduce the possibility of leakage and joint seizure. The outer joints have extra glass tooled onto rims to add to chip resistance.

Infrared Kjeldahl Digestion

The Kjeldahl method is the official method for determining nitrogen and protein contents in :

KJELDAHL METHOD:

Johan Kjeldahl a Danish chemist in 1883 while studying the changes of protein content during the transformation of barley into malt process developed the method for determining Nitrogen which then took its name from him. Because of its high degree of precision, reproducibility and versatility, the Kjeldahl method is used today to determine content of Nitrogen and proteins according to official methods.(AOAC, EPA, DIN, ISO).

Seldom in human history has an invention remained basically unchanged for such a long time as Kjeldahl's method for Nitrogen determination.

More than 90% of protein containing samples and over 60% of all Nitrogen containing samples can be analyzed by using this basic procedure.

Filtration Unit

We offer a wide variety of membrane filter support glassware for most scientific applications that require vacuum filtration.

1. Choose the appropriate support glassware that fits the diameter of the filter membrane you are using (25, 47 or 90mm).

2. Choose the appropriate connection for the flask or bottle you will collect the filtrate in.

The following information will help you select the most appropriate glassware for your specific application.

FILTER SIZE

25mm Support glassware is designed for filtering small volumes of liquids in particulate or biological contamination studies.

47mm Support Glassware is recommended when analyzing up to 500 ml. of liquids for particulate or biological contamination, water/waste water analysis (reference: standards methods for the examination of water and waste water, 18th Edition, 1992), sterility testing of pharmaceuticals by the bacteria retentive filter method (reference: U.S. Pharmacopeia XXIII), and for preparing particulate free or sterile filtrates.

90mm Support glassware is recommended for filtering large sample volumes, liquids with a heavy particulate load and viscous liquids when a high flow rate is required. The larger filter area can provide filtration rates up to four times faster than 47 mm assemblies.

SUPPORT STYLE

Fritted Glass Supports. Filtration assemblies with fritted glass supports are recommended for general membrane filtration analysis of samples for microbiological or particulate contamination. This support style is recommended when using gridded filters because the glass frit provides the most even distribution of the sample through the filter membrane. All of the fritted glass support bases have a coarse (40-60m) porosity.

CONNECTION TO FLASK/BOTTLE

Silicone Stopper Connections. Silicone or neoprene stoppers are the most common connector from the filtration assembly to a Erlenmeyer style flask and are recommended for most routine filtration studies of aqueous solutions. Stoppers are not recommended when filtering organic or most corrosive solutions or when preparing HPLC mobile phase.

Ts 40/35 Glass Joint Connections. Filtration assemblies with Ts 40/38 outer joint connections are recommended when filtering corrosive solutions and organic solvents. This connection style is also recommended when preparing HPLC mobile phase, since the all-glass connection eliminates phthalate contamination that can occur when using silicone or neoprene stoppers.

Quartz Distillation Apparatus

The unit consist of a primary boiler with built-in heater. The primary boiler has a O ring groove at the top, on which a silicone O ring sits. The secondary boiler with condenser is mounted on the primary boiler. A double wall condenser ensures separate condensation of vapor coming from the two boilers using a single cooling circuit. The whole unit is mounted on powder coated stand with electrical terminals for easy connection either to the mains or DAPS (Distillation Apparatus Power Supply) The bottom outlet is connected to a T joint of which one limb is connected by a rubber tubing & pinch cock for cleaning sediments in primary boiler by acid wash and other limb to the water leveller of DAPS.

Water Softener

  • Very hard over 300 PPM
  • Hard 150 – 300 PPM
  • Moderately Hard 50 – 150 PPM
  • Soft 0 – 50 PPM

Water softeners contain high capacity strong acidic caution exchanger in bead form. It is used in sodium form to remove hardness due to Ca & Mg ions. During Service Period:-
RSO3Na + CaCl2= (R.SO3)2Ca + 2 NaCl
RSO3Na + MgCl2= (R.SO3)2Mg + 2 NaCl

Thus calcium & magnesium hardness is removed & replaced with more soluble sodium ions in form of sodium chloride. When this soft water is fed into distillation unit, scale formation is reduced drastically & sodium chloride starts to settle at the bottom of boiler over a period of time. This can be easily removed by using concentrated hydrochloric acid.

The softener has been recharged once in two months depending upon the hardness of water at customers place. To recharge 10-15% sodium chloride solution is used & passed through the softener. This unit is not recommended for where there is very high TDS of more than 600 PPM.

Regeneration
(R.SO3)2Ca + 2 NaCl = R.SO3Na + CaCl2

Note:- When raw water is fed to distillation unit. Calcium & magnesium carbonates & chlorides (Hardness) settle in the boiler. This hardness does not get dissolved even when heated with HCL or HNO3. Hence, a water softener is used.

Water softener can be used only where total hardness of water is less than 400 PPM. TDS of water does not reduce/change by using water softener.

The hardness test is performed as follows:-

  1. Take 25 ml of water
  2. Add 5 drops of ammonia buffer solution.
  3. Shake it & then add a pinch (2 crystals) of Erichrome black T- Indicator.
  4. The Colour turns red. (In Case the colour turns blue at this stage only it means zero PPM hardness).
  5. Now add drop by drop N/50 EDTA Solution until the colour turns blue. Each drop is 2ppm of hardness.

Note:-

  1. Use the softener, perform the test & see the result. The hardness should be between 0-50ppm.
  2. In case the softener has not been used for some time or has been kept idle, charge the Softener using Sodium Chloride solution & then perform the test.
  3. The white colour deposits which forms is due to precipitation of sodium chloride upon heating & not due to calcium.

How to Regenerate a Water Softener:-

  1. Perform the hardness test if your water is showing more than 300ppm even after using softener, then it means you need to recharge it. Follow the steps mentioned below:-.
  2. Disconnect the inlet & outlet rubber tubing.
  3. Prepare Sodium chloride solution by adding approximate 200 grams Sodium chloride to 20 liters distilled or de-ionized water.
  4. Pass the sodium chloride solution through the softener inlet drop by drop. The outlet can be left to the sink. The solution should pass through the softener for period of 45 minutes. Rinse it with de-ionized water & it is ready for use once again.
