Wooden toys represents the joy of colorful childhood, its playfulness and its yearning to grow up into high spirited butterflies. Kaveri craft toys is housed at the famed Channapatna town , near Bangalore, in Karnataka. The indigenous craft of what is known as wooden lacquer Toys is a century old. The unique craft and technique of the traditional Channapatna toys are hereditary and is passed through generations. The making of wooden Toys The base wood used for the export quality toys is Hale wood or famously known as soft wood (Wrightia Tinctoria) for its uniformly fine grain and light weight. The wood is cut into desired sizes and left for seasoning. Later, the edges and superfluous wood is removed to make it cylindrical shaped logs. The seasoned log are then fixed to a lathe machine to turn them into various shapes, using different tools. Further, sand-paper is pressed against the revolving wood pieces to prepare for the application of lacquer. The lacquer sticks are prepared from natural shellac. The shellac is heated and kneaded for a thorough mixing. Then it is mixed with the pre prepared natural colour dyes and non-toxic pigments to achieve desired shades. Lacquer sticks in various colours are applied against the revolving wood piece which is already turned and smoothened, giving it a uniform layer of coloured lacquer. For a natural wood shade wax is used instead of lacquer. Further, a dry screw pine leaf is pressed against the rotating piece to attain a uniform spread of colour and a brilliant translucent finish. The polished pieces are sorted for any defects, assembled to make the final toy and then packed in boxes
