Ellipsometer

The J. A. Woollam Co. is a manufacturer of spectroscopic ellipsometers for non-destructive thin film and bulk material characterization. Spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) has become the standard for measuring thin film thickness and optical constants (n and k). Spectroscopic ellipsometry is used for characterization of all types of materials: dielectrics, semiconductors, metals, organics, and more. We offer ellipsometers covering a spectral range to meet any need (from the vacuum UV to the far IR). Many upgrade options are available with our ellipsometers: automated sample translation, variable temperature (heating or cooling), focusing optics, liquid cells, etc Ellipsometry MeasurementsEllipsometry is primarily interested in how p- and s- components change upon reflection or transmission in relation to each other. In this manner, the reference beam is part of the experiment. A known polarization is reflected or transmitted from the sample and the output polarization is measured. The change in polarization is the ellipsometry measurement, commonly written as:Spectroscopic Ellipsometry Tutorial Ellipsometry Measurements equation[10] A sample ellipsometry measurement is shown in Figure 6. The incident light is linear with both p- and s- components. The reflected light has undergone amplitude and phase changes for both p- and s- polarized light, and ellipsometry measures their changes.

IonEtch Sputter Gun

The tectra IonEtch ion gun is a filamentless ion source based on a microwave plasma discharge. Like its big brother the Plasma Ion Source, the IonEtch works by coupling microwave energy into a coaxial waveguide and from there via evanescent wave coupling, into a plasma chamber. The intense oscillating electric fields cause the gas to breakdown and a plasma discharge to take place. A quadrupole magnetic field around the chamber further enhances the plasma density via the Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) effect. Ions are extracted from the plasma using simple two or three grid single-hole extraction optics. The use of microwaves to sustain the plasma allows ions to be extracted at very low energies without the plasma collapsing (down to 25eV) and since there are no hot metal electrodes in the plasma also permits the use of reactive gases such as oxygen and hydrogen. The new GenII is the second generation of the IonEtch sputter gun with some significant improvements in performance and features. To name only some: higher total beam current, high efficiency direct microwave coupling without need of tuning, Alumina plasma cup now standard, only 4 screws to undo non-bakeable parts and more compact, space saving air side setup. Besides the standard version a high current version of the IonEtch sputter gun is available with up to 4mA ion current and 120Acm at 100 mm working distance.

Adsorption Analyzer

Sorption Analyzer in combination with Magnetic Suspension Balance The heart of the IsoSORP instruments is the Magnetic Suspension Balance for accurately weighing the sample material. Rubotherm's patented Magnetic Suspension Balance allows highly accurate weight measurements of samples in closed vessels to be performed. The sample is weighed from the outside and the suspension force is contactlessly transmitted from the pressurised measuring cell to a microbalance at ambient atmosphere. This means that mass changes of a sample in a closed reactor can be recorded even under extreme conditions with the utmost accuracy. Unique features of the Magnetic Suspension Balances Technology - used in all IsoSORP Instruments Contact free weighing under extreme conditions The patented magnetic suspension coupling allows weighing in hermetically closed reactors. By separation of measurement area (sample) and weighing area (balance), damage or contamination of the balance caused by process media or experimental conditions can be avoided. The reactor is completely metal sealed and heated so that even highly aggressive or corrosive fluids or vapors can be used over a wide pressure and temperature range. Excellent long term stability The sample can be automatically disconnected from the balance at any time to re-tare or recalibrate the balance. Afterwards, the sample is reconnected to the balance and the measurement continued. This way, high precision long term measurements can be performed without any baseline drift or accuracy loss.

Light Source

  • Measurement Techniques Absorbance, Fluorescence, Reflectance & Transmittance
The DH-2000-BAL is the world's only balanced deuterium halogen source. It uses innovative filtering technology to produces smooth spectrum across entire range. This same technology eliminates the alpha deuterium line in the visible region. Using a combination of deuterium and halogen lamps, the DH-2000 is flexible and ideal for measuring a sample that has multiple features in different spectral regions or for analyzing a variety of different samples in your lab. All deuterium sources have an alpha line, a sharp spectral feature centered at 655 nm. This feature and other deuterium lines produce "unbalanced" output in the deuterium and halogen sources. Simply adjusting the integration time of the spectrometer to suppress the alpha line does not solve the problem as the efficiency of the system at UV wavelengths drops significantly, compromising signal-to-noise performance. A system of proprietary internal mirrors and filters to eliminate the D-alpha, D-beta and Fulcher lines in the deuterium source, producing a "smoother" spectrum across the entire wavelength range and eliminating problems associated with saturation. By comparison, most combination UV-NIR sources can be adjusted for relative intensity only.

Electrochemical Analyzer

The Model 600E series is designed for general purpose electrochemical measurements. The figure below shows the block diagram of the instrument. The system contains a fast digital function generator, a direct digital synthesizer for high frequency ac waveforms, high speed dual-channel data acquisition circuitry, a potentiostat, and a galvanostat (available only in select models). The potential control range is 10 V and the current range is 250 mA. The instrument is capable of measuring current down to picoamperes. With the CHI200B Picoamp Booster and Faraday Cage (fully automatic and compatible with the 600E series), currents at sub-picoamperes can be measured. The instrument is very fast. The function generator can update at a 10 MHz rate. Two high speed and high resolution data acquisition channels allow both current and potential (or an external voltage signal) to be sampled simultaneously at a rate of 1 MHz, with 16-bit resolution. The instrument offers a very wide dynamic range of experimental time scales. For instance, the scan rate in cyclic voltammetry can be up to 1000 Vs with a 0.1 mV potential increment or 5000 Vs with a 1 mV potential increment. The potentiostat galvanostat uses a 4-electrode configuration, allowing it to be used for liquidliquid interface measurements, and eliminating the effect of the contact resistance of connectors and relays for high current measurements. The data acquisition systems also allow an external input signal (such as spectroscopic) to be recorded simultaneously during an electrochemical measurement.

Thermal Hydrogen Cracker

The new H-flux Atomic Hydrogen Source* works by thermally dissociating hydrogen in an electron bombardment heated fine tungsten capillary (thermal hydrogen cracker). By bouncing along the hot walls the molecular hydrogen is cracked to atomic hydrogen. This is e.g. very useful for in-situ, damage free cleaning of residual oxygen prior to sample coating or analysis. Other applications are in surface modifications appreciating the high reactivity of atomic species. The H-flux Atomic Hydrogen Source is UHV compatible and mounted on a NW35CF (2.75"OD) flange, making the source an easy retrofit to existing vacuum systems.
