• Cable testing represents a vital part of the lifecycle of a power line, and a consistent regimen of analysis and reporting significantly improves a utilitys reliability indices.
  
  
• Cable pin pointers and fault locators from Megger make the process of cable route tracing and identification quicker and more accurate. These pinpointing systems are portable for everyday fieldwork and provide services from power and telecoms to water, rail and gas utilities. HV and LV buried cables can be traced to a depth of up to 5m.
  
  
• Cable testing can be broken down to different steps of the process, starting with a time domain reflectometer test to look for an incident signal on the line or, in some high resistance situations, VLF testing. Time domain reflectometers (TDR) are used in cable fault detection and pre-location. This form of cable testing is executed by transmitting an incident signal on to the cable and listening for the signal reflections. If the cable is of uniform impedance and is correctly terminated then there will be no reflections and the incident signal will be absorbed at the end of the cable by the termination. If there is a cable fault then some of the incident signal will be reflected back to the TDR .

Pre-location involves the identification of the range in which a fault resides. If this is required as a separate step as is the case in high resistance faults the arc reflection method (ARM) is appropriate when used alongside a surge wave generator, colloquially referred to as a thumper.

Due to cable run deviations, even the more accurate pre-locators do not often mesh precisely with the real world site. Pinpointing identifies the fault accurately onsite and takes the form of either acoustic breakdown detection or, in the case of short circuits and other non-audible breakdowns, an audio frequency system or a pulse DC voltage with a step voltage receiver.

The Keysight N3301A is a half-rack width mainframe with 2-slots that accepts combinations of N330x user-installable load modules (150 W to 600 W) for easy system configuration and future reconfiguration. The N3301A holds up to two N3302A, N3303A, N3304A, and N3307A load modules, or one N3305A and N3306A load modules, allowing up to 600 watts of total maximum power.

Testing multiple output dc power supplies and dc-dc converters can be very time consuming if each output must be tested sequentially. If measurements are being made through a MUX using one DMM, this is what will happen. Using the built-in measurement capabilities of the N3300A electronic loads, all outputs can be measured simultaneously. Alternatively, multiple single output power sources can be tested simultaneously.
