Kishtwar saffron, cultivated in the scenic Kishtwar region of Jammu and Kashmir, has recently been awarded the prestigious  Geographical Indication (GI) tag  by the Geographical Indications Registry. This recognition underscores the exceptional quality and unique characteristics of saffron produced in this area, which is renowned for being one of the most expensive spices globally. The GI tag serves as a mark of intellectual property, confirming that Kishtwar saffron originates from a specific geographical region and possesses distinctive qualities due to its environment and traditional cultivation methods. Locally known as  ‘Kung’  and nationally referred to as  ‘Kesar, ’  this saffron plays a crucial economic role in Kishtwar, where approximately  120 hectares  of land are dedicated to its cultivation. Kishtwar saffron has achieved not only the GI tag but also a  Grade 1 quality rating . This rating was awarded after a rigorous analysis of saffron flowers harvested from Berwar, conducted at the India International Kashmir Saffron Trading Centre (IIKSTC) in Dussu Pampore.
