TarPlastic is a cold applied bituminous caulking compound with mineral fillers in a volatile solvent to retain its plasticity. It is available in a putty form. TarPlastic remains plastic for a considerable length of time. The skin and interior harden to some extent after application. It conforms to the requirement of IS : 1580 1991.
Application
- It is ideal for use in situation where certain degree of expansion, contraction and vibration is expected, like around J Hooks used for fixing Asbestos / GI sheets. It can also be used for caulking various types of roofs and masonry walls, including
- Fully plugging gaps in tiles caused by sagging of battens or otherwise in case of tiled roofs.
- Filling minor cracks / gaps in terraced roofs or other locations.
Advantages
- Cold applied and ready to use. Does not require specialised handling for application.
- Does not creep or flow when applied on vertical or sloping surfaces.
- Remains plastic for a considerable time and, therefore, can accommodate a good degree of expansion, contraction and vibration.
Packing
Available in 200 Kg, 20 Kg, 4 Kg and 1 Kg Containers.
Storage
- Keep in cool and dry place in air tight container under shed away from heat.
Health & Safety
- Lid of the container should be firmly fixed, when not in use.
- Inflammable and hence keep away from direct flame.
- TarPlastic shall have no harmful reaction, when it comes in contact with drinking water.
- Use goggles, hand gloves and trowel during application.
- Clean hands with warm soap water after application
Application Methodology
- Surface must be clean, dry and free of grease, oil and painting compound.
- Concrete surface must be dry and stable (atleast) four weeks.
- Check that mastic is compatible with surface in terms of adhesiveness, staining and chemical compatibility (test a section first).
- If necessary apply a thin layer of Sealant Primer on the surface.
- After the primer has dried press flexible non adhesive filler on to the groove.
- The joint filler should be free of holes to ensure that bubbles do not form in the joint. For better finish use protection strip.
- For a narrow joint apply the mastic in one movement and for very wide joint, apply the mastic in three places: The first two on the edges of the joint and third in the joint filler.
- Smooth out with soapy water. Press the mastic against the edges and the joint while taking care not to create air bubbles. Remove protection strip.
