Berberis aristata, also known as Indian barberry, “chutro” or tree turmeric, is a shrub belonging to the family Berberidaceae and the genus Berberis. Indrayan Roots/Bitter Apple Root:- The Indrayan Roots or Bitter Apple Root plant has a large perennial root that sends out long and slender, angular, tough, rough vine-like stems. The stems are normally spread on the ground and have a tendency to climb over herbs and shrubs by their axillaries branching tendrils.A scabrid perennial twining herb or climber, usually prostate, or spreading on ground with slender stem and bifid hairy tendrils. Due to its particular smell, babul seeds are not palatable as such to animals. But it is consumed by animals when mixed with more palatable conventional feeds. Babul seeds and babul pods chuni can be used up to 15% level in the concentrate mixture of lactating cows. These can be included at 39% level in the concentrate mixture of crossbred calves (Punj, 1988). Babul seed chuni can be used up to 30, 45 and 15% level in the ration of growing calves, adult bullocks and lactating cows, respectively (Talpada et al., 2002). Patel et al. (1982) found that incorporation of processed babul seeds at 15, 30 and 45% level in ration of kankrej bullocks resulted in lower CP digestibility and lower retention of nitrogen, calcium and phosphorus as compared to control. In scarcity period, babul pods and babul pods chuni can be used for feeding of animals to save the livestock. Babul pods must be ground before feeding to cattle, otherwise the seeds pass undigested with faeces.

The perennial plant grows from a massive rhizome system which may extend over six feet into the ground.
New shoots can appear over 20 feet from the parent plant. Above the ground, the plant rarely reaches four feet in height. It is a heavily-branched, gray-green thicket with long spines along the branches. It bears small, bright pink to maroon pea flowers and small legume pods, which are brown or reddish and constricted between the seeds. The seeds are mottled brown beans.

The Balanites aegyptiaca tree reaches 10 m (33 ft) in height with a generally narrow form. The branches have long, straight green spines arranged in spirals. The ellipsoid fruit is normally less than 4 cm (1.6 in) long and is green when not ripe; it ripens to a brown or pale brown fruit with a crispy skin enclosing a sticky brown or brown-green pulp around a hard stone. The carpenter ant Camponotus sericeus feeds on the nectar exuded by the flowers. The larva of the cabbage tree emperor moth Bunaea alcinoe causes defoliation of the tree.
