Introduction
Chikungunyais a viral disease transmitted to humans by infected mosquitoes carrying chikungunya virus. Majorly it causes fever and severejoint painthat can persist for years. Aedes aegypti mosquito (also called yellow fever mosquito) is the primary transmission agent for Chikungunya Virus (CHIKV). This is usually found in tropics and hence the reason why Chikungunya is predominantly seen in Asian countries. Anyone can get infected with Chikungunya virus. The virus infection can be seen in new born to old people. It is an RNA virus that belongs to the alphavirus genus of the family togaviridae. The name chikungunya derives from a word in the Kimakonde language, meaning to become contorted, and describes the stooped appearance of sufferers with joint pain (arthralgia).
CHIKVNIL'S MECHANISM OF ACTION
Boswellia serratahas been used in traditional medicine for centuries to treat inflammatory diseases . The pharmacological effect has been mainly attributed to its major constituent AKBA and has been used as an antiarthritis drug in traditional Indian ayurvedic medicine. Clinical trials have indicated improvement of chronic symptoms with this treatment . Antiviral activity has also been documented for methanolic extracts of Boswellia that have been described to inhibit HCV protease activity in vitro. It has been described to affect the eicosanoid biosynthetic pathway, thereby producing its anti-inflammatory effects.
Curcuminhas been used for centuries in Asia to treat various disorders. It has been described to possess antiviral , antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antineoplastic activities in vitro and in vivo . It is a natural polyphenol isolated from turmeric (Curcuma longa). Curcumin's antiviral action is mainly due to its inhibiting action on virus entry into cells like blocking of hepatitis C virus (HCV) entry into hepatocytes by curcumin has been described in studies.
Curcumininhibits chikungunya virus majorly by following mechanisms -
