Tear strength and tear resistance need to be measured where a product is intended to tear, e.g. along a crease or perforation or to open a package, as much as to simply ensure strength. In some materials a tear will propagate rapidly, predictably or evenly, in others it will not. Tear testing methods set standard conditions under which a product or standard material sample can be treated in a repeatable way. Usually the tear is initiated with a cut or notch in the prepared sample.Some tear test methods use a falling pendulum to create impact, but most apply a tension, and Mecmesin meets these standards with its range of universal testers.

Compressive shear testing is simply the pushing apart of a material sample along a plane parallel to, and between, opposing forces. Typically it is used to test adhesive bonds, where it is the compressive equivalent of a tensile lap shear test, or the internal strength of a material that is designed to bear shear forces.A compressive shear test may be single, where one part is pushed down across another, or double, where a bonded section is pushed out from between those on either side. Penetration resistance testing involves the insertion of a probe into a material with thickness. This can determine the change of state of a material that cures or sets, or the texture of a material (e.g. food, pharmaceutical preparations, or cosmetics) whose firmness is a measure of a quality. Cone probes are used for gels or viscous materials, needle probes for silicone pharmaceutical stoppers, and broader probes for penetrometers as used in cements and concretes.

Adhesive strength is measured for many purposes. Some bonds are designed not to break in use (e.g. construction materials), some are designed to allow separation in normal use (e.g. a foil lid), and others are designed to be resealed a number of times (e.g. resealable bag tape). Some things peel without a separate adhesive layer, such as an induction-welded foil, or grip seal bags, and some adhesive joins for security come apart but must not reseal. Adhesive bonding can be measured by tensile testing, shear testing or compression testing, but where there is flexibility in a joined layer, a peel test is appropriate.A universal tester can be used for any peel test.
