Martensitic stainless steel is a specific type of stainless steel alloy. Martensitic steels are low carbon steels built around the Type 410 composition of iron, 12% chromium, and 0.12% carbon. Martensite gives steel great hardness, but it also reduces its toughness and makes it brittle, so few steels are fully hardened.
Duplex and Super stainless steel offers greater strength and higher resistance to stress-corrosion cracking than most other types of stainless steels, and is used mainly in desalination plants, heat exchangers, and marine applications.
