Ready-to-Eat (RTE) and Ready-To-Serve (RTS) food e.g. Idlis, dosas, pav bhaji, meat products like pre-cooked sausages, ham, chicken products, curries, chapattis, rice, vegetables like aloo chole, navratan kurma, channa masala etc.
Ready-to-eat snacks like idlis, dosas, pav bhaji etc. are sold across the counter and have a very short shelf-life, hence the packaging requirements of these products are different from those of ready to eat products like curry rice, upma, vegetable biryani etc., which are retort processed for longer shelf-life. Products like idlis, dosas, pizzas are packed in packaging materials having low water vapour and oxygen permeability, odour and grease resistance, and good physical strength.
Retort pouch is a special package in which the perishable food items are preserved by physical, and/or chemical means. It is a flexible laminate, which can withstand thermal processing, and combines the advantages of the metal can and the boil-inbag. Ready-to-use retort pouches are flexible packages made from multilayer plastic films with or without aluminium foil as one of the layers. Unlike the usual flexible packages, they are made of heat resistant plastics, thus making them suitable for processing in retort at a temperature of around 121C. These retort pouches posses toughness and puncture resistance normally required for any flexible packaging. It can also withstand the rigours of handling and distribution. The material is heat sealable and has good barrier properties.
3-ply laminate consisting of PET/Al Foil/PP is commonly used for packaging of ready to eat retort packed food. The product packed in such laminates has a shelf-life of one year. The other materials generally used in retort pouch structure includes nylon, silica coated nylon, ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) and polyvinyledene chloride (PVDC). Based on their major ingredients, the ready to cook mixes can be categorized into four groups:
Cereal BasedThe range of cereal based mixes contains Idli, chakli etc. which are quite sensitive to moisture and if it reaches a certain level above normal, the content becomes soft and unfit to consume. Thus, cereal based mixes usually are packed in Polyolefin plastic pouches so that they are provided with 3-4 months of shelf life.
Legumes Based:Though they have almost same requirements as that of cereal based mixes, but have lower permissible moisture pickup hence, they require quality packaging material having good water vapor impermeability.
Fat RichThese mixes have rich fat content and are susceptible to rancidity, oxygen and water vapor. Though simple CPP Pouches are known to have relatively shorter life but in order to provide longer life LDPE or HD-LDPE packs are used. As indicated above, Full body shrink sleeves cover the entire body of the container. Since the sleeve can be completely printed from end to end, the entire surface of the container can be adorned with graphics and visuals to make the container more eye-catching. Whilst its difficult to replace glued paper labels, shrink labels can easily be used to cover older product containers to re-brand them or to give a fresh new look. In full body shrink sleeves the portion covering the cap or the closure is separated from the rest of the body by a horizontal perforation which can be easily torn to open the container. The fact that sleeve has to be torn in order to open the container makes it evident if the package has been fiddled around with.
Induction sealing wads are used to seal containers and protect their contents from deterioration or contamination due to access of air, moisture or any other undesirable impurity to the contents of the container. Induction sealing wads also prevent tampering or adulteration as it is not possible to remove and re-apply the wads without leaving noticeable evidence.
After the containers have been filled and capped, an induction current is created and passed through a conducting aluminium foil disc, present in the induction sealing wad, heating it up. The Aluminum disc has a layer of polymer film laminated to it, which melts, and sticks to the mouth of plasticorglasscontainers to give them airtight seal. The process takes a few seconds to complete and neither the container nor its contents have to cope with any temperature changes and remain unaffected. There are two types of Induction Sealing Wads :
Cap sealing wadsIn this type, the cap or closure for the container is separate from the induction sealing wad which is inserted into it. There are various kinds of wads and all are normally multi-layered. Broadly they can be categorized as :
Single Piece Sealing Wadsare fitted into cap of the containers and screwed around the container mouth. These capped-containers are made to pass the induction heat sealer. With the threaded cap upon bottle providing required pressure, as sealing layer cools, it adheres to bottle and provides for a perfect sealed surface.
Two piece sealing wadsnormally consists of a uppermost layer ofpaperboard (that maybe glued to the cap). The next layer is wax that is used to bond a layer of aluminum foil to the paperboard. The lowermost layer is a polymer film laminated to the foil. After the cap or closure is screwed to the container , the container is passed under aninduction coil, which emits an oscillating electromagnetic field. The induction coil begins to heat-up the conductivealuminum foil. The heat melts the wax, which gets absorbed into the paperboard layer and the foil is released from the cap. The polymer film also heats and flows onto the lip of the container. After cooling, the polymer creates a bond with the container resulting in an airtight sealed product. Two piece sealing wads are used for leaving some type of secondary seal in cap so as to prevent leakage when induction seal is removed from the mouth of the container.
Capless Sealing WadsCapless Sealing Wads are used when the container is not meant for reuse and the screwable cap is made redundant. The function of the cap seal is limited to providing an airtight and spill-proof seal to the contents of the container which are meant for single use only. The aluminum foil laminate is supplied either pre-cut in container neck shape or in reel form. Where it is supplied in a reel, it is die cut online and placed onto the container neck. It is then pressed down by the seal head, the induction cycle is activated and the seal is bonded to the container.

Tamper evidenceThe seal on the mouth of the container cannot be removed and reinstated without leaving evident sign of tampering. This also helps in differentiating real products from spurious similar looking products.
Leak prevention/protectionInstallation of induction sealing wads is widely used in the food and beverage industry to prevent leakage and also to extend shelf life. It is sometimes mandatory to seal liquid chemical products before shipping to prevent them from spilling over other shipments.
FreshnessInduction sealing wads prevent contaminants present in the environment to mix with food products, and sometimes even increase theshelf lifeof products.
Pilferage protectionInduction sealing wads cannot be reinstated upon removal without leaving a trace of the original wad on the mouth of the container. This helps in identifying if any pilferage has happened. Infact, Pharma companies want to purchase wads that purposely leave film or foil remnants on containers as a deliberate safeguard against tampering or counterfeiting.
SustainabilityIn some applications, introduction of induction sealing wads actually reduces the container weight as the presence of seal ensures enough security so as to prevent the need for a robust neck / closure.
Application Areas:
The simplest kind of shrink sleeves are those that cover a part of the container e.g. the shoulder, and shrink to fit upon heat treatment. Shrink sleeves can follow the shape and form of a container with utmost ease something that conventional adhesive labels can never achieve. These kind of shrink labels are used in conjunction with separate shrink seal for the container closure to prohibit tampering and pilferage. Some people prefer full body shrink sleeves which cover the entire outer surface of the container in one sleeve. Shrink sleeves help in reducing the warehousing costs of packaging. For packaging a variety of flavors of same product, the same container can be used in conjunction with custom printed labels for each flavor. Thereby there wont be any need to store and maintain inventory of pre-printed containers for separate flavours, the differentiation will happen through labels once they are applied on the containers.
Preforms are essentially shrink labels which are used as contamination prevention seals or tamper evidence seals for containers that tend to taper inwardly and dont have shoulders to support the sleeve before shrinking. The perform seals can be transparent or coloured, printed or unprinted as per client requirements. Preform seals not only provide safety against pilferage and adulteration, they tend to provide a very effective indication if the container and its contents have been tampered with in any way. These seals can also have warning messages printed on them cautioning the end-users against using the product in case seal has been found broken. Although not mandatory, but usually perforations are provided on the seals for easy tear and removal from the container top. Preforms are commonly used in food and pharma packaging.
