Camprofile or "Grooved" Gaskets have proven themselves in all industrial applications. Camprofile gaskets are found in industrial power plants and in the primary circuits in nuclear installations. Used either between flanges or in heat exchanger units in nuclear applications. The Petrochemical and Chemical industries benefit too, as the gaskets are used in applications where high pressures and temperatures are maintained and consequently high bolt loads need to be controlled.

Rubber is the most cost-effective material to use where temperatures and pressures are low and the chemical environment is mild. Different elastomers offer different mechanical and chemical properties. Cloth inserted materials are better able to handle movement and high compression loads. |

Carbon Fiber and Graphite Flake sheets are able to withstand significantly more aggressive chemical environments (other than powerful oxidizing environments) and higher pressures than standard non-asbestos gasket materials. Metal inserted materials are able to operate at even higher pressures. In reducing environments, pure graphite can handle up to 5000F. |
Graphite gasketing materials are made from pure exfoliated exhibiting excellent sealing characteristics, withstanding a high range of temperatures pressures and chemicals. The homogeneous material is free of respirable fibers, binders and additives. Standard grades are 95% - 98% pure graphite sheet. Graphite is extremely conformable giving it the ability to flow into flange surface imperfections. Its low permeability and chemical resistance make it an ideal choice as a sealing material. Mercer offers a wide range of Graphite with various core materials such as tanged stainless of Foil stainless steel reinforcement.

Teflon-based gasket materials are able to withstand significantly more aggressive chemical environments (including highly oxidizing environments) than standard non-asbestos gasket materials. However their temperature, pressure and mechanical performance is inferior to standard non-asbestos gasket materials. Metal inserted and expanded PTFE are able to operate at higher pressures.
Mercer carries Garlock, Thermoseal and Gore-Tex brands of Teflon-based gasket materials. These materials are available in thicknesses 1/32" through 1/4".

Ceramic Fiber Gaskets are appropriate when an inexpensive heat seal is required. Only used where sealing pressures are low, it happily operates in areas where temperatures are in excess of 1472 F. It is soft and can be easily laminated to form thicker seals, hence flange finish is not particularly important when using this material. Used mainly as high temperature insulation for sensitive apparatus it has good dielectric strength and so is often used as an electrical insulation. Usually supplied with an organic binder to improve it's tensile strength. |
The Ring Type Joint was intially developed for high pressure/temperature applications found in the petroleum industry. The main use being in the oil field on drilling and completion equipment. However, today this product range can also be found on valves and pipework assemblies, along with some high integrity pressure vessel joints.
Molded gaskets in a wide variety of sizes and cross-sections including quad rings, bullets, bee-hives and deltas are available. |
If a custom length is needed, gaskets can be made using a standard cross-section extrusion. The gaskets will be spliced using vulcanizing or adhesive as appropriate.
If a custom cross-section is needed, tooling can be made. The gasket will be extruded, cut to length and spliced using vulcanizing or adhesive as appropriate.
Standard Pipe Flange:We stock all popular sizes and materials for immediate shipping.
Custom Gaskets:We handle any size or shape. We fabricate these gaskets the same day, or within the hour if needed.
Encapsulated:A gasket of one material is totally enclosed in a continuous layer of another material (usually Teflon) with no join. Usually done with O-Rings and Molded Seals.
Envelope:A gasket of one material is covered by an envelope of another material. We supply slit or milled envelopes and conventional or square form shields.
Laminated:Two or more materials are layered together to form a gasket which is often enclosed in an envelope.
Jacketed gaskets combine the temperature resistance of a metal jacket with the sealing performance of a soft filler. The jacket and filler materials are selected to optimizes temperature and chemical performance; construction style is dictated by pressure needs, gasket geometry and sealing issues. |
