What Types of Safety Audits are There?

There are many types of safety audits, but the two most widely used are:

    Management system audits

    Safety function audits

      Management System Audits:

A management system audit is “horizontal”. This means it looks across the entire company structure and considers the broad, in-depth scope of management policies and procedures that are in place to manage the organization's health and safety at the site.

Management system audits are typically assessed against the following standards:

AS/NZS 4801 – Occupational Health and Safety Management System

ISO 45001 – Occupational Health and Safety

OHSAS 18001 – Occupational Health and Safety Management System

    ISO 14001 – Environmental Management

    ISO 9001 – Quality Assurance

      Safety Function Audits:

Safety function audits are “vertical”. This means they look at the detail of a specific activity through a vertical slice of the organization's structure, from senior management to the workplace.

Safety function audits include, but are not limited to:

    Classified plant and administration

    Electrical safety management systems

    Emergency preparedness

    Fixed plant

    Isolation and tagout

    Manual tasks

    Noise

    Traffic management

    Workshops

A health and safety audit are a thorough evaluation of a company’s health and safety administration, scheme and processes. It is a procedure that assesses your conformity with health and safety protocols. They are similar to financial audits in that they evaluate compliance and performance.

Objectives of Health and Safety Audit

A health and safety audit aims to assess the following:

Alignment of safety processes with the law

    Risks in the workplace

    Strengths and weaknesses of policies

    Areas that require improvements

Essential resources for health and safety audit and their proper use

    Potential hazards

    A proper review system

Benefits of Health and Safety Audit

The major advantage of carrying out a health and safety audit is the identification of risks and provision of information that are necessary for their management.

Also, this audit allows you to protect staff and clients from any potential harm. This results in the sustenance of the organization’s integrity since a serious accident could result in prosecutions, damage of reputation or financial losses.

This further enhances productivity and reduces unnecessary costs.

Elements That Contribute to a Successful Health & Safety Audit

Conducting a health and safety audit is more than a routine, it entails identifying risks and hazards, and establishing processes to alleviate them. Therefore, the following factors are important in carrying out an efficient audit:

Dedication: For an effective audit, every member at all levels of an organization has to be fully committed to improving the health and safety performance of the organization.

Data collection: With this, you know where to channel your energy to and it enables you to measure the progress made towards improvement.

Adequate tools: A checklist, audit rules, reference lists, report templates and the likes are essential tools needed to carry out an audit successfully.

Risk management: A company should put plans to identify the risks and corrective measures should be developed.

Reports: A thorough and detailed report is necessary in making required decisions.
