Mojopanda’s journey started in 1974 when it’s founder Sushanto Mittra started his career with a small advertising firm in Delhi specializing in making educational films in 8mm and 16 mm format for imparting education in rural India using film as a media. This took him to the rural interiors of Saharanpur in Chilkana- Sultanpur, a small village based in the foothills of the Himalayas. Living in rural areas was a new and revealing experience as he had lived and studied in urban Lucknow. With time on his hands as the villagers were engaged in farming the
‘Basmati rice’ in the fertile soil of the region located in the doab basin of two major rivers Ganga
and Yamuna he felt the need to provide medical facilities to the inhabitants of 10 villages and
built a team of qualified doctors and began training paramedics from villages, later known as the
“Bare Foot Doctors’ to combat tuberculosis - a rampant disease associated with poverty.
Though the project was funded by an international ngo and United Nations, the available
resources were too meager and frugal to have any lasting impact. Sushanto realized that
providing medical relief was a temporary intervention and and root cause was poverty, paucity of
income and access to resources
