The name chickpea comes from the Latin word cicer, referring to the plant family of legumes, Fabaceae. Chickpeas, also known as garbanzo beans, have been grown and eaten in Middle Eastern countries and all around the world for thousands of years. Their nutty taste and grainy texture pair well with many other foods and ingredients. It is a rich source of vitamins, minerals, and fiber, chickpeas may offer a variety of health benefits, such as aiding weight management, improving digestion, and reducing your risk of disease.
There is some difference between black and white chickpeas. In white chickpeas, there is more than 10 to 11% of protein than in black chickpeas. White chickpeas(Kabuli chana) is bigger in size than black one. But there is more fiber in black chickpeas than in white ones.
Garbanzos are becoming an increasingly popular plant food and for good reason. Like other legumes, they’re highly nutritious and a good plant-based alternative to meat. As well as offering a number of important health benefits, they’re also a sustainable crop and have a wide variety of uses in cooking and baking. While there are a few potential downsides to consuming chickpeas, including exposure to glyphosate in some products, they can make an important contribution to a varied and whole-food-based diet.
