Kyoto Electronics Manufacturing Co., Ltd. are leaders in the field of portable instrument manufacturers. These instruments are mainly used in industries such as pharmaceutical, food, confectionary, and chemicals.
One such instrument is the wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) meter, also called the heat stroke checker. As the name suggests, this hand-held instrument gives you critical atmospheric indicators including the wet bulb globe (WBGT) value, temperature, relative humidity, and globe temperature, which help predict the occurrence of heat strokes. These instruments find application in sports—both indoor and outdoor—factories, construction sites, field works, and many more.
What is wet bulb globe temperature?
Wet bulb globe temperature is an important indicator of the heat stress that a human goes through when exposed to direct sunlight. It is an index that is computed by taking into account the effect of temperature, humidity, wind speed (wind chill), and visible and infrared radiation—usually sunlight. The process for determining the WBGT value is also described in ISO 7243, Hot Environments - Estimation of the Heat Stress on Working Man, Based on the WBGT Index.
This value is made use of by sportsmen, military agencies such as the United States military, and sports bodies like the American College of Sports Medicine.
WBGT meter or heat stroke checker – 203A / 203
The wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) meter manufactured by Kyoto Electronics Manufacturing Co., Ltd. in Japan is an ingeniously built hand-held instrument that is extremely simple to use. It is designed for both outdoor and indoor use and all it needs is 2 AAA batteries. It can be configured to raise an alarm when the WBGT value goes beyond a certain limit. This helps sportspersons get notified when the atmospheric conditions are no longer suitable for training. This intelligent device can store up to 500 values of all the indexes that are displayed at one instance. The instrument is also accompanied by a connecting cable which can be used for transferring the saved data on to a computer. KEM also offer stands for the instrument to be mounted, so that they can be stationed in a single place.
203A / 203B feature highlights
The WBGT value displayed by the instrument can be used to gauge the level of exertion that the sportsperson can subject themselves to. The following is a table indicating the response action that needs to be taken corresponding to the WBGT value recorded.
WBGT [°C] | Types of warning and required rest |
Below 21 | Safe (needs occasional supply of water) |
21 - 25 | Note (needs immediate supply of water) |
25 - 28 | Caution (needs to take rest) |
28 - 31 | Warning (Stop active physical exercise) |
Above 31 | Dangerous (Cancel physical exercise) |
