Process Plants that depend on rotating machinery have long recognised that high vibrations are the most obvious indicator of a machine’s condition. By installing continuous vibration measuring devices, optimised plant uptime, maximised productivity and reduced maintenance costs have given organisations a competitive advantage. Apart from these efficiencies, there are also environmental benefits. It is well established that an excessively vibrating machine will consume up to 15% more energy, primarily due to unbalance and or mis-alignment.
Recognising these advantages, Indian Industry over the past 10 years has seen an upsurge in the number installed on-line vibration measurement channels. In parallel with productivity gains, plant load factors have progressively risen, especially in the power sector. On average 4 channels or vibration test points per machine train are connected to a continuous monitoring system that, in most plants, is managed from the DCS (Distributed Control System).
