Turkey red or madder root extract is a rich source of red colour pigment used in textile industry for natural dyeing of cotton and silk fabrics. the Madder extract contains two organic red dyes: alizarin and purpurin. These chief colouring components are produced by solvent extraction method, first, the roots of madder are chopped into small pieces and then these pieces are boiled at high temperature. Then the solvent mixture is filtered and dried to give powder form dye which can further be crystallized. Madder extract produces a wide range of red colour from orange red, brick red crimson red and blood red colours. Madder gives a vibrant red colour when treated with alum mordents.
