Tricuspid Valve
Tricuspid Valve is one of the four valves present in the Human Heart. Tricuspid Valve is the Atrio ventricular Valve present between Right Atrium (RA) & Right Ventricle (RV). This valve regulates the flow of venous blood from RA to RV and prevents the back flow of the same.
For long, the tricuspid valve disease (in particular, Tricuspid Regurgitation) was considered less important when compared to the Aortic & Mitral Valve.
Tricuspid Regurgitation
Tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is a condition in which this valve does not close properly. Consequently, blood flows backward into the right upper heart chamber (atrium) when the right lower heart chamber (ventricle) contracts.
Tricuspid regurgitation may result from the structural changes caused to any or all of the tricuspid valve apparatus. Rheumatic Valve Disease remains the common cause of TR. The valves undergo fibrous thickening without commissural fusion, fused chordae and calcific deposits. Enlarged Ventricle also causes TR. We cannot discount the fact that the ventricle enlargement is because of TR.
Untreated TV Regurgitation can lead to right sided congestion and eventually right heart failure.
Shortness of breath, unexplained weakness, fatigue, swelling in the legs, ankle or feet, abdominal swelling, liver dysfunction and weight loss are the common symptoms associated with Tricuspid Valve regurgitation.
