Contact SupplierTantalum strong, it is a ductile metal that is almost immune to chemical attack at room temperature. Tantalum can be drawn into a fine wire which is used to evaporate some metals like aluminum. A high melting point is one of the outstanding characteristics of tantalum. Tantalum bars are used as a substitute for platinum, which is more expensive to make components for chemical plants, nuclear power plants, airplanes and missiles. Tantalum can be alloyed with steel in order to increase steel’s ductility, strength and melting point. It is renowned for its resistance to corrosion by acids. And at temperatures below 150 °C tantalum is relatively immune to attack by aqua regia. Tantalum can also be dissolved with hydrofluoric acid or acidic solutions containing the fluoride ion and sulfur trioxide, as well as with a solution of potassium hydroxide.
