    Some Concept about the Solar Energie’s availability on Earth Surface along with the utility of Solar Photovoltaic Cell/Panel.

    Just beyond the outer atmosphere on our earth, the Sun’s irradiation Intensity is about 1300 W/m2[Watts per sq. meter]. Of course this 1 sq. meter area should be  perpendicular to the sun rays. When this energy reaches the earth a part of this gets attenuated in the atmosphere. This attenuation depends on the condition of the atmosphere e.g. cloudy, partly cloudy etc. On a clear day at the surface at sea level, this intensity becomes about 1000 W/m2. This intensity also varies depending on the earth’s rotation on its axis [inclined at a fixed angle w.r.to orbital plane] and position on the orbit.

     

    This solar energy is a broad spectrum energy starting from far infrared to lower ultraviolet. But only a part of this spectrum can be utilized by a Photovoltaic panel. Currently the spectrum which can be utilized for Photovoltaic conversion is to some extent limited to almost visible spectrum. Thus Lux Meter, which generally is restricted to visible range of the solar spectrum, can very usefully give a measure of the input luminous Power to the Photovoltaic panel.


    By Lux Meter the average solar light level extends from 32000 Lux to 100000 Lux. Thus 100000 Lux light intensity can be attributed to the peak Power of a Photovoltaic panel. For example a Photovoltaic panel rated at 150 W Peak can generate 150W of Electrical Power when light input is about 100000 Lux. Now approximately if the light intensity is 60000 Lux then 60% of the peak Power is generated by the panel.

     

    For a fixed Solar Panel [unlike Sun tracking Solar Panel], this intensity becomes minimum at dawn and dusk and becomes maximum at around 12 PM. This is all because of the changing angle at which sun rays are falling on the Photovoltaic panel(s) during the day.
