India is the world's 6th largest consumer of energy with current consumption of 17.3bn liters per of gasoline which is expected to grow 8.5% every year till 2020. The International crude prices are soaring and consequently the petrol prices in India have also increased several times in the past few months. There are indications of further price rise in the near future. Going by this trend, assuming a barrel of crude oil costs USD 100, India will spend US19.4bn on importing gasoline by 2020. Given concern regarding energy security and CO2 emissions, such a trajectory is neither desirable nor economically sustainable.
