product description
silpruf® is a one part, neutral cure, low modulus silicone sealant. After application, the sealant reacts with atmospheric moisture at room temperature to form a highly elastic rubber seal for building joints and glazing. It is unaffected by weathering conditions such as sunlight, uv radiation, rain, and temperature extremes. This excellent weather ability and its high movement accommodation enables the sealant to perform even after many years of exposure.
Silpruf® silicone sealant may be used to seal assemblies of masonry, concrete, metals, plastics, wood and other common construction materials. Silpruf® is specially designed for use in butt joints or lap shear joints in weather sealing and glazing applications subjected to movement. The low modulus characteristic reduces strain on the substrate surface and the elastomeric quality allows excellent recovery from extension and compression cycling.

expansion joint design
silpruf® silicone sealant should be no thicker than 10mm and no thinner than 6mm. The width to depth recommendations are given below:

joint filler (backup) materials
the recommended joint filler materials are flexible polyurethane or polyethylene foam rod. If the joint is too shallow to allow foam rod, use a polyethylene tape.
The depth of the silpruf® silicone sealant bead is regulated by the depth of the back up material. The back up rod should be 25% - 50% greater than the width of the joint, thereby extending continuous pressure against the joint walls.
surface preparation
clean all concrete, masonry and stone joints of all contaminants and impurities. Concrete with release agents or water repellents on the surface, loose gravel, old sealants and other surface treatments and protective coatings are examples of materials which must be removed from the joint surfaces to obtain proper sealant adhesion. The substrates should be cleaned where necessary by grinding, blast cleaning (sand or water), mechanical abrading or combination of these methods to provide a sound, clean surface for sealant application. Dust, loose particles, etc., should be blown out of joints with oil-free compressed air or vaccum cleaned.
Clean all metal, glass and plastic surfaces by solvents such as isopropyl alcohol (ipa), (mek).
masking
the use of masking tape is recommended to ensure a neat job and to protect adjoining surfaces. Do not allow masking tape to touch clean surfaces to which the silicone sealant is to adhere. Masking tape should be removed immediately after tooling of the sealant is accomplished and before the sealant begins to cure.
Method of application
install backup foam, masking tapes as specified. Apply silpruf® silicone sealant in a continuous operation, horizontally in one direction and vertically from the bottom to
the top of the joint opening. A positive pressure adequate to properly fill and seal the joint width should be employed. Tool and strike the silpruf® silicone sealant with light pressure to spread the material against the back-up material and joint surfaces. A tool with a concave profile is recommended for tooling.
In glazing, tool the sealant at the sill so that precipitation and cleaning solutions will not pool.
As the silpruf® sealant cures, methyl alcohol vapours are released from the sealant surface. The odour of methyl alcohol will completely disappear when the cure is completed.
excess sealant should be cleaned from glass, metal and plastic surface while still uncured, using solvents such as toluene, xylene, naphtha etc. On prrous surfaces, the excess sealant should be allowed to go through the initial cure. It should then be removed by abrasion or other mechanical means.
handling and safety
these products are manufactured for industrial use only.
Uncured product contact irritates eyes. In case of contact with eyes, immediately flush with water for 15 minutes. If irritation persists, get medical attention.
Uncured product contact may irritate the skin. To clean from the skin, wipe very thoroughly with a dry cloth or paper towel, before washing with soap and water.
By-product released during application and curing may irritate the skin and eyes.
packaging and storage
silpruf® is available in 300 ml plastic cartridges. Shelf life is 6 months from the date of manufacture, if stored in the original unopened container at normal room temperature.
limited warranty
gebsi warrants that its product will conform to gebsi specifications at the time of application or use. The product must be stored in accordance with gebsi recommendations, and used or applied before the earliest of (1) the indicated “use before date”, (2) one year from date of purchase, or (3) expiration of such other period or recommended storage time stated in the gebsi product literature. If notified, in writing, of a claim within one month of the product’s use or application, gebsi will, at its option, replace or refund the purchase price of any gebsi product which does not satisfy the foregoing warranty
