Sesame is one of the oldest oilseed cultivated plants in the world. Its seeds may be the oldest condiment known to man. These are dried oval shaped seeds which are harvested by hand. "Open sesame"—the famous phrase from the Arabian Nights—reflects the distinguishing feature of the sesame seed pod, which bursts open with a sharp pop when it reaches maturity. They are especially rich in mono-unsaturated fatty acid, oleic acid, which helps lower “bad cholesterol” and increase “good cholesterol”.

Flavorful, crunchy sesame seeds are widely considered healthy foods which add a nutty taste and a delicate crunch to many dishes. The seeds have a rich nut like flavor which becomes more enhanced once they are roasted under low flame with much care. They are also the main ingredients in tahini (sesame seed paste). These seeds add magic to the taste of the most widely relished Indian sweet call halvah. Sesame seeds are used in bakery products, curries, pasta, salads and stir fries.
