Local Name : Indian Snakeroot, SARPAGANDHA (Hindi)
Descriptions : Evergreen shrub growing to 1m with milky latex. Has whorls of elliptical leaves, tiny pink and white tubular flowers and glossy red berries.
Parts of use : The roots with bark are used for extraction of Alkaloids.
Medicinal Uses : The extracts contain a complex mixture of indole alkaloids, including reserpine, rescinnamine, ajmaline and yohimbine. Ajmaline has been used to regulate heartbeat. It is useful in the treatment of high blood pressure and anxiety. It may also be used to treat insomnia, as well as mental health problems such as psychosis. It is slow acting and needs time to be effective.
Active Constituent : Resarpine.
