Cobalt is a lustrous very hard silvery metal belonging to a group called the "transition metals". It is one of only 3 ferromagnetic transition elements along with iron and nickel. It is a hard, lustrous, silver-gray metal that is found in nature primarily as minerals such as cobaltite, erythrite, and skutterudite. Cobalt has a melting point of 1,495°C and a boiling point of 2,900°C.

Cobalt is also used in the production of rechargeable batteries, such as lithium-ion batteries, as a cathode material.

Cobalt is also an essential nutrient for humans and animals, as it is a component of vitamin B12. However, exposure to high levels of cobalt can be toxic, causing lung and heart problems, as well as skin and eye irritation.
