Prilocaine, CAS No. : 721-50-6

Prilocaine is a local anesthetic of the amino amide type. It is often used in dentistry. It is also often combined with lidocaine as topical preparation for dermal anesthesia, for treatment of conditions like paresthesia.
It works by blocking nerve signals in the body and used as local anesthetics. This is also used for smaller surgery.
Prilocaine binds to the intracellular surface of sodium channels which blocks the subsequent influx of sodium into the cell. This block is reversible and when the drug diffuses away from the cell, sodium channel function is restored and nerve propagation returns.
Prilocaine acts on sodium channels on the neuronal cell membrane, limiting the spread of seizure activity and reducing seizure propagation.
The antiarrhythmic actions are mediated through effects on sodium channels in purkinje fibers.
