Water soluble pH indicator used in the 6.8 (yellow) to 8.2 (red) range. Commonly employed as a cell tissue culture pH marker. Under normal conditions, phenol red added to the growth medium will have a pink-red color. Dying cells or overgrowth of contaminants will cause a change in pH resulting in a change in indicator color.
Solubility
Soluble in water yielding a dark red solution (25 mg/ml), alcohol (4 mg/ml), methanol, ethanol (200 mg/ml), and aqueous alkali hydroxides or carbonates with formation of a red colored solution.
Applications
It is commonly employed in cell biology laboratories as a cell tissue culture pH marker. Under normal conditions, phenol red added to the growth medium will have a pink-red color. Usually 15 mg/l is used to produce this effect. If problems arise, such as dying cells or overgrowth of contaminants, this will cause a change in pH resulting in a change in indicator color. This color change is an indication that the medium needs to be replaced. Additionally, Phenol Red could potentially be useful as a differentiation factor.Phenol red in tissue culture media can act as a weak estrogen, especially with human breast cancer cells. Phenol red can be used to measure hydrogen peroxide in supernatants from cultured macrophages in multiwell plates.Phenol Red sodium salt commonly employed in cell biology laboratories as a cell tissue culture pH marker.
