Phenol

Phenol, also known as phenolic acid, is an aromatic organic compound with the molecular formula C₆H₅OH. It is a white crystalline solid that is volatile. The molecule consists of a phenyl group (−C₆H₅) bonded to a hydroxy group (−OH). It is mildly acidic and requires careful handling due to its propensity to cause chemical burns

Phenol once was widely used as an antiseptic, its use pioneered by Joseph Lister (see History section).

Phenol derivatives have been used in the preparation of cosmetics including sunscreens,^[28] hair colorings, skin lighteningpreparations^[29], as well as in skin toners/exfoliators.^{[citation needed]} However, due to safety concerns, phenol is banned from use in cosmetic products in the European Union^[30][31] and Canada
