Phenol, also known as carbolic acid, is an organic compound with the formula C₆H₅OH. It consists of a benzene ring (C₆H₅) with a single hydroxyl group (OH) attached to it. Here are some key points about phenol:

    1. Physical Properties: Phenol is a colorless or white solid at room temperature, but it may appear pinkish or brownish due to oxidation. It has a distinctive, sweet odor and is highly soluble in water. It has a melting point of about 40°C (104°F) and boils at around 182°C (360°F).

    2. Chemical Properties: Phenol is a weak acid compared to carboxylic acids but can donate a proton (H⁺) from its hydroxyl group. It reacts with strong bases to form phenoxide salts. Phenol undergoes electrophilic substitution reactions, such as nitration and sulfonation, more readily than benzene due to the activating effect of the hydroxyl group.

    3. Uses:

       - Antiseptic: Historically, phenol was used as a disinfectant and antiseptic. However, due to its corrosive nature and toxicity, it has largely been replaced by other antiseptics.

       - Industrial Applications: Phenol is a key precursor in the production of various chemicals, including plastics (e.g., Bakelite), resins, and pharmaceuticals. It’s used to manufacture epoxy resins, which are used in coatings, adhesives, and composites.

       - Laboratory: In the lab, phenol is used as a reagent and in the synthesis of other organic compounds.

    4. Health and Safety: Phenol is toxic and can cause burns if it comes into contact with skin. It is also harmful if inhaled or ingested. Proper safety precautions, such as using personal protective equipment and working in a well-ventilated area, are important when handling phenol.

    5. Environmental Impact: Phenol can be harmful to aquatic life and the environment if not properly managed. Waste containing phenol needs to be treated appropriately to avoid environmental contamination.
