The aim of the treatments was to restrict vertical growth of the sugarcane to reduce the risk of lodging and to shorten the distance between nodes. Erect sugarcane with short internode distance is ideal for planting through billet planters. The primary effect of Paclobutrazol is to reduce canopy growth and direct nutrients and the carbohydrates synthesised in the leaves into fruit and seed production, rather than into non- Productive leaves and stems.
Paclobutrazol is used in Sugarcane for two primary reasons: To sustain the health and vitality of trees and as a supplement to pruning.
The purpose of paclobutrazol use is to produce compact plants with denser vegetative growth. On turf, the material also reduces the frequency of required mowing.
