Black pepper (Piper nigrum) is a flowering vine in the family Piperaceae, cultivated for its fruit which is usually dried and used as a spice and seasoning. When fresh and fully mature, it is approximately 5 millimetres (0.20 in) in diameter and dark red, and contains a single seed like all drupes. Potassium, the mineral in black pepper, helps improve your stomach's ability to digest foods and promotes intestinal health. Because black pepper is a carminative, it discourages intestinal gas from forming, and as a bonus, the outer layer of the peppercorn aids in the break-down of fat cells. The best way to eat pepper to harness maximum benefits is to eat freshly ground pepper, and not cook it along with food. 2. Stimulates digestion: Again, the piperine in black pepper eases digestion and stimulates the stomach, which then secretes more hydrochloric acid that helps to digest proteins in food. Black pepper and white pepper are made from the Piper nigrum plant. Black pepper is ground from dried, whole unripe fruit. White pepper is ground from dried, ripe fruit that has had the outer layer removed. The black pepper and white pepper powder are used to make medicine. Potential Use in Weight Loss. Though it might not directly cut belly fat, black pepper is a welcome addition to a calorie-controlled fat-loss diet. A teaspoon of pepper has only 8 calories but offers tons of flavour, which makes it a lower-cal substitute for marinades and sauces.
