Due to decreasing box sizes, many designers are now placing the transceiver cage on the board edge where the outside cable assembly can be mated directly into the device. Because it can be exposed outdoors, the interconnect system’s integrity can be vulnerable unless ruggedized. Also, the system needs to be flexible enough to accommodate many active device options (There is a broad selection in the market.) and still maintain connectivity integrity.
