Family : Asteraceae / Compositae Introduction Roman chamomile ( Anthemis nobilis) also known as English chamomile, is a tall perennial herb cultivated in England, Belgium and france. It grows all over Europe and exists in the form of various subapecies in German, roman and English as lawn variety or wilb chamomile. The flowers are solitary , possessing a yellow, convex disc and white rays. Roman chamomile grows well in any good fairly dry soil with full exposure to sun and temperate climate is preferred. The crop and requires careful handling. The flowers are harvested after every two week . A seasons�s harvest consists of sbout five or six pickings in each field. In dry, sunny weather, the flowers are very beautiful, large and pure white, whereas during rainy, danp weather, it appears grayish or rusty. Two varieties are under cultivation, one is known as white-headed or double flowered Roman chamomile. The other variety is yellow- headed as such they exhibit considerable morphological differences despite the widespresd use of these plants in popular medicine and therapeutic applications 10. The oil extracted from whoie plant yields 0.20-0.35% oil while high grade oil from flowers has 0.60-0.80% yield. The flowers are large and white with yellow centres and possess strong pleasant odour. Uses The oil exhibits sweet, herbal, green woody odour character. It is used in high class perfumery to impart rich, long- lasting odour notes. It is also used for flavouring of black tea.
