Muff Coupling

Muff couplings are long cylindrical coupling bored and keyed to fit over both shafts. These are split axially and clamped over both shafts with recessed bolts. Muff couplings consist of a hollow cylinder whose inner diameter is the same as that of the shaft. These are fitted over the ends of the two shafts by means of a gib-head key. The power is transmitted from one shaft to the other shaft by means of a key and a sleeve. It is, therefore, necessary that all the elements must be strong enough to transmit the torque. Muff couplings are the simplest type of rigid coupling for transmitting high torques at high speeds where misalignment is neither present nor desired.
