Mesalazine, also known as mesalamine or 5-amino salicylic acid (5-asa), is an anti-inflammatory drug used to treat inflammation of the digestive tract ulcerative colitis and mild to moderate crohn's disease. Mesalazine (mess-al-iz-een) is a medicine which is used in maintaining remission from ulcerative colitis and active ulcerative colitis. Mesalazine reduces inflammation in ulcerative colitis. It may be used during a flare up or after a flare up to help prevent further attacks from happening. There are no known interactions between alcohol and mesalazine mesalazine is considered to be the active moiety of sulfasalazine. The mechanism of action is uncertain, but may be due to its ability to inhibit local chemical mediators of the inflammatory response especially leukotriene synthesis in the gi mucosa. Action may be topical in terminal ileum and colon rather than systemic.
