Matta rice also known as Palakkadan Matta Rice is an indigenous variety of rice grown in the Palakkad district of Kerala, India. The rice is cultivated in the season of Virippu in the months of April - May and harvested in the months of September - October. The brown outer layer of matta rice contains many nutrients whhich includes magnesium and calcium. Matta rice grains can significantly lower the risk of heart disease due to the lower content of fat.
